Bridging the Gap Through Hair Care Education: March–May Impact & What’s Next

Over the past couple of months, I’ve had the honor of expanding the reach of hair care education within our community, specifically for underserved populations. What started as a personal passion has grown into a meaningful, hands-on impact through intentional collaboration and shared purpose.

This work has not been done alone. I’ve had the privilege of partnering with Ty Johnson of Curls & Caregivers, whose years of experience and dedication to hair care education have been instrumental in this journey with her program. We met during cosmetology school and quickly realized that our goals and vision for impact aligned. From that connection, we made the decision to combine our knowledge, experience, and resources to help change the way families understand and care for natural hair.

In March and April, we hosted online educational sessions focused on equipping caregivers with the knowledge and confidence to properly care for natural and textured hair. These sessions were designed to break down the basics in a way that is approachable, practical, and empowering.

On May 24, in partnership with Curls & Caregivers, we hosted an online seminar alongside Charlottesville DSS, DePaul, and CAFF (Community Attention Foster Families). We welcomed approximately 40 families who joined us for an engaging and informative session centered around hair care education. During this time, we covered:

Understanding curl patterns and hair types, building simple, consistent hair care routines, proper product selection and usage, bedtime routines to maintain healthy hair, and protective styling to prevent damage and promote growth.

Our goal was simple: to bridge the gap between the known and the unknown so that no child experiences hair damage or neglect due to a lack of understanding.

On April 24, we had the pleasure of working with an incredible group of women through PACEM, where we served the unhoused community with an evening dedicated to hair care, connection, and joy. It was more than just a service; it was about restoring confidence, creating safe spaces, and reminding each woman of her worth.

On April 30, Humane Hair had the pleasure to join Ty Johnson and Curls and caregivers on the continued mission with Chesterfield DSS as a co-host, providing hands-on education and real-life techniques that caregivers can immediately implement at home. From detangling methods to product layering and styling, every detail was centered around making hair care manageable, practical, and meaningful.

Looking ahead, we are excited for what’s to come.

On May 17, we will be hosting our Roots of Care in-person seminar in partnership with Curls & Caregivers. This hands-on experience will allow participants to not only learn but practice essential techniques in real time—creating a deeper level of confidence and understanding.

This work is about more than hair. It’s about dignity. It’s about identity. It’s about making sure every child and every individual feels seen, cared for, and confident. Through education, we are not only teaching techniques. we are changing experiences and building stronger, more informed communities.
